The Jonesville Wildcats fell to the Landrum Cardinals 15-6 on Thursday.
Quan Smith scampered into the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead at intermission.
After a scoreless third quarter, Jonesville seemed in control.
A defensive stand late in the contest resulted in a turnover on downs and Jonesville took possession deep inside of their own territory. After short yardage gains on first and second downs, the Cardinals defense looked to be on the verge of forcing the Wildcats to punt when Jonesville picked up what would have been a 17-yard first down first down run. However, the ball was fumbled at the Jonesville 27-yard line and Landrum scored on the ensuing drive, using two plays to get it done and following up with a successful two-point conversion.
“The effort was better this week both in practice and during the game than last week,” said Coach Michael Mullinax. “The kids had a better grasp of what was going on this week, and we put ourselves in a position to win. That is a step forward. We have to keep working during the week in order to keep moving forward.”
Sims Middle, Seventh and Eighth Grade Teams
Sims’ seventh- and eighth-grade teams picked up wins over DR Hill this week on the gridiron in a battle of the Tigers.
On Thursday, quarterback Shy Smith led the Sims eighth-graders to a 28-16 win over DR Hill.
With 40 seconds left before intermission, Sims’ signal caller connected with Darren Osborne on a 65-yard touchdown pass, then ran in the two-point conversion to take the 14-6 halftime lead 14-6.
Sims opened the second half with a bang when Smith hauled a 70-yard kickoff return into the end zone and Glenn scored on the two-point-conversion.
Markevious Glenn and Ty Washington each added touchdowns for Sims with 5- and 7-yard runs, respectively.
“This was not our best performance,” said Moss. “We had some mistakes and a key turnover that allowed them to score in the second half. We have a bye week to correct these mistakes. Right now our worst opponent is Sims. We are 2-0 on both teams but we have things to correct. The kids are working hard and learning the system.”
Sims’ seventh-grade tigers defeated DR Hill 26-14 on Wednesday.
Ladarius Jeter scored on the first offensive play for Sims when he took a hand off and scooted down field for a 46-yard touchdown run. Jeter also had touchdown runs of 65 and 27 yards in the contest. Jaden Bates had a 3-yard touchdown run and the lone two-point conversion came by way of Aaron Parham.
Terrence Briggs had four catches that led to scoring drives and the offensive line worked to create some nice lanes for the running backs.
The stingy Sims defense shut down the DR Hill ground game and held a team that scored 56 points against its opponent last week to just 14 on Wednesday.
Sims led 12-6 at the halfway mark when the defense stepped up and did not allow DR Hill to cross the 50-yard line until the final seconds of the game.
Dre Glenn was the defensive MVP with five tackles for loss. Jaden Bates forced a fumble and Jerome Henry contributed a blocked punt.
“This was an exciting win for our team,” said Coach Mitchell Moss. “The players came out excited and played with passion. We are not a finished project — We played great but there are still things that need to be corrected and this bye week will allow us to focus on the little things. “
