UNION — According to the USC Union admissions office, the new Bantams baseball team has been a boost to university enrollment and made the way for yet another athletic program.
USC Union hosted a welcome back social for fall semester students in the Truluck Activity Center on Wednesday. Various student clubs and organizations were represented with information booths at the social, and students were treated to lunches consisting of Chick-fil-A sandwiches as well as other giveaways and raffles.
The university has a total enrollment of 475 students this semester, which includes a 10 percent increase in traditional students.
Director of Enrollment Brad Greer credited the new Bantams baseball team with some of the traditional student increase.
“The Bantams baseball team was a big help and provided a boost,” Greer said. “Altogether, we have around 25 players who decided to attend USC Union for the chance to play baseball. We had students from high schools that we have never had students from before — mainly high schools around the Midlands (Columbia area).”
Greer said there are also a lot of good players from Union and surrounding counties such as Spartanburg, York, Newberry and Greenwood on the team.
The entire Bantams team was present for Wednesday’s social as Coach Paul Wilkes introduced the team and had them line up in front of the rest of the students for the introduction. Wilkes called up one of the players — center fielder Joe Beatty — to speak to those in attendance. Beatty said he was excited to be part of the team and asked everyone to come out and support the Bantams. Wilkes said Beatty is a natural leader who has solid communication skills on the field.
Women’s Softball
Greer said that the university will introduce women’s softball in fall 2013, and he expects that program will provide yet another increase in enrollment next year.
