Eighth Grade Tigers Stun Bucks

UNION — The Sims Eighth Grade Tigers recorded a 20-0 shutout over the Gable Bucks on Thursday night when the game was called three minutes into the third due to weather.

The Tigers struck first with a 31-yard hook-up between quarterback Shy Smith and wide receiver Tremayne Jeter for the early lead. Smith used a 26-yard quarterback keep to tack on six more and also ran in a two-point-conversion. Sims’ final touchdown came by way of a 5-yard Ty Washington scamper.

Markevious Glenn had a notable performance for the Tigers from the running back position and the stingy Sims defense was a key variable on Thursday with A.J. Hunter forcing two fumbles that were recovered by Smith and Trevor Gibson.

Jeter picked off a Gable pass and the defensive unit held the Bucks to negative yardage.

“Our defense dominated,” said Coach Mitchell Moss. “That was nice to see. Our offense did some really good things, too. We have a challenge this upcoming week and must regain our focus for the task at hand.”

Moss feels that his team will be ready come Thursday.

“The kids have really bought in to what we want to do,” he said. “The coaching staff has done a great job preparing our players.”

Mabry Too Much For Jonesville

JONESVILLE — The Jonesville Wildcats came up short in Thursday’s season opener, suffering a 24-6 loss to Mabry.

The Wildcats fell behind 12-0 before answering with a 67-yard screen pass from Brandon Thompson to Quan Smith. The two-point conversion failed, and Jonesville trailed 12-6. Mabry returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 18-6 and the Wildcats began a methodical march down field that ended on the Mabry 20-yard line as the clock ran out for intermission.

A Jonesville fumble deep inside its own territory resulted in a short Mabry drive for six more for the 24-6 final.

“We now have the first game jitters out of the way, and we expect to get better,” said Jonesville Coach Michael Mullinax. “We did a lot of things well over the course of the game, we just have to start stringing them together. We’re looking forward to hitting the practice fields again and working on those things that need improvement.”
