UNION — Three was the unlucky number of the night for Union County on Friday as Greer came to town for Jacket Bowl 2012.

In week three, three plays in under three minutes turned the entire game around and Union County came up 13 points short.

“I’m actually embarrassed,” said Coach Steve Taneyhill. “We definitely took a step back tonight.”

Union County relinquished a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and Greer used less than six minutes to collect 26 points.

With 10:12 left in the first half, Greer quarterback Josh Gentry ran in a 50-yard touchdown and Union County was pinned back at its own 15-yard line on the ensuing kickoff. Union County tried a screen play on third down and nine but Greer defensive lineman, Tim Ballenger intercepted the pass and ran in the pick-six. A successful point-after-kick knotted the game at 14-14 with 8:42 on the clock.

After picking up a single first down, Union County was forced to punt and Greer’s star running back Quez Nesbitt returned a kick for 45 yards to set up an eventual 4-yard touchdown scamper courtesy of Emmauel Kelly. The PAT was no good and Greer took a 21-14 lead.

A Union County fumble on the kickoff was recovered by Greer and Nesbitt found the endzone on a 34-yard haul. Greer opted for a two-point converson and failed, carrying a 26-14 lead into intermission.

Union County cut the margin back to single digits late in the third quarter when quarterback Keiston Smith connected with Kalay Jones for a 30-yard touchdown pass and Brandon Shetley’s point-after-kick was on the money.

Greer answered back with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and Union County running back Trayvond Davis scored on 4th and goal for the 41-28 final.
