He’d been nursing a hamstring injury throughout the pre-season and was the Jackets only questionable starter heading into Friday night’s match-up with Spartanburg. However, senior wide-receiver Victor Ruth not only suited up, he played an important role in the Jackets’ 41-33 win over the Vikings.
During the third quarter, Ruth capped off a Union County drive with a 42-yard touchdown reception to give the Jackets their first lead of the game.
“Vic gave us a spark in the second half,” said Taneyhill.
After a Spartanburg touchdown and unsuccessful two-point-conversion, Union County had a one point lead. Quarterback Keiston Smith connected with Ruth for a 25-yard pass and found him again on the following play for a 43-yard crowd-pleasing touchdown and a successful point-after kick gave the Jackets a 35-27 advantage.
“He had a good return on a kickoff and then the big catches ran in for touchdowns,” Taneyhill stated. “He adds another playmaker to the wide-receivers.”
Ruth is a reliable target and is sure to be a factor in Union County’s 2012 campaign.
