The efforts of the Union County Democratic Party to register voters and get them to the polls in November will get a boost Monday night from a visit by an official of President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in the Upstate.

Party Chair Ann Stevens announced Friday that Deven D. Anderson, Upstate regional field director for Organizing for America, will be the main speaker the party’s meeting at 6 p.m. Monday. Stevens said that Organizing for America is handling the Obama campaign’s effort to mobilize and organize the public to register to vote and then do so in November on behalf of President Obama and the Democratic Party. She said Anderson will speak about the efforts of Organizing for America and offer suggestions and advice to the local party about its efforts.

“The focus of the meeting will be on registering voters,” Stevens said. “We’re not only emphasizing registering to vote if you’re not already registered, but also that people need to contact the Union County Voter Registration Office to make sure they are registered and to check and see if they have changes to your address or, in the case of women, if your name has changed on file. You need to make sure they’ve got your correct address and name.

“Deven D. Anderson will be speaking to us about this, about getting people registered and getting them to the polls,” she said. “He will be emphasizing the importance of getting everyone registered to vote and then getting out the vote in November.”

Convention Tickets

Another subject of Monday’s meeting will be the tickets the local party obtained for the final night of the Democratic Party’s presidential nominating convention in Charlotte, NC.

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will each be nominated for a second term on Sept. 6 at the convention which is being held in the Bank of America Stadium. Obama and Biden will accept their nominations and then make their acceptance speeches.

Among those listening to and watching Obama and Biden’s speeches at the stadium will be 98 Union County residents who took the local party up on its offer of free tickets to the final night of the convention. Stevens said the local party was able to obtain 98 tickets to the convention and all of them had been claimed by Wednesday afternoon, although people were continuing to call about them Friday morning.

“We’ve got 98 people going who are very excited about attending the convention and we’re very excited that they’re going,” Stevens said. “We’re still getting phone calls about the tickets but I have to tell those who are calling that there are none left.”

The tickets are at the Rock Hill headquarters of Organizing for America and Stevens she will pick them up today. She said she will keep the tickets until Sept. 6 and distribute them when those going to the convention board the chartered buses that will take them to Charlotte.
