Two men are accused of robbing a woman of her income tax refund earlier this month.

Kenneth Lamar Norman, 22, of 208 Monroe St., Union, and Franklin Bernard Harris, 24, of 423 Whitlock Lake Road, Jonesville, both were charged Monday by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The victim in the case is Harris’ girlfriend. Harris told officers he, too, was a victim in the case and not a perpetrator. Sheriff David Taylor said an investigation revealed the two men had been together all day before the robbery occurred and were seen together after it was reported.

In an unrelated case, Harris is charged by the Union Public Safety Department with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and assault and battery with intent to kill. He is accused of shooting a man in the arm at Evergreen Mobile Home Park on Feb. 8.

The case of the stolen income tax check was reported on Feb. 17. The victim, a 20-year-old Union woman, told deputies that she believed Harris, her boyfriend, and Norman — whom she thought was Harris’ cousin — had robbed her. She said she picked up Harris and Norman at the Mini-Mart in Jonesville to ride to Spartanburg. She said she got a few dollars worth of gas and went into the store to pay for it. When she came back out, Harris had a pistol in his lap. She told him to get rid of it; she didn’t want it in the car. She said he and Norman got out of the car and walked behind the store. She thought they were going to hide the gun.

They then left for Circuit City in Spartanburg where the victim planned to purchase a TV. She said as she looked at prices she got her money out to count it and noticed she had $100 missing. She told Harris and Norman she was ready to go. They then went to a nail salon where she got her nails done while the two men sat in the car.

On the way home, the victim said she asked Harris if he had taken her money. He became angry and said he would not take money from her. At the stoplight in Jonesville, Harris told her he was going home. They turned onto West Springs Highway and then Rogerstown Road where Norman pulled what the victim said looked like the same gun she had seen earlier in her vehicle. She said Norman pointed the gun at Harris and said Harris was trying to “play him.” Harris opened the car door and fled on foot.

The victim said Norman pointed the gun at her, cursed her and then crawled through the car between the seats and exited the passenger side because the child safety locks were engaged on the back doors.. He then pointed the gun over the roof of the car, took her pocketbook, told her to get back in the car and she had better not report the incident.

The victim went back to the Mini-Mart and called 911. She told deputies her purse contained her tax refund — approximately $1,500.

Public safety officers already had warrants on Harris for the Feb. 8 shooting incident, Chief Sam White said. After the robbery report in Jonesville, they began searching places he might be. Cpl. Jerome Beatty found Harris at Hunt Drive Apartments and took Harris into custody.

Accused of using drugs during pregnancy

Kelly Suzanne Walton, 21, of 2432 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, was charged Friday by the sheriff’s office with unlawful conduct toward a minor child.

A report said the Department of Social Services received a complaint from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after Ms. Walton’s newborn child tested positive for Cannabinoids and THC, the by-product of marijuana. Tests were taken by the hospital after a complaint was received from the child’s father that Ms. Walton had been continuously smoking marijuana during her pregnancy.

Teen-arrested

A Jonesville teen-ager who told deputies he was the victim in an incident where shots were fired Monday night is accused of firing a gun at someone else in December.

Jarvis Andrew Jeter, 18, of 426 Whitlock Lake Road, was charged Tuesday with assault and battery with intent to kill. He is accused of being involved in the shooting incident on 191 Cedar Grove, Road, Jonesville, on Dec. 15.

Kashif P. Nash, 20, of 191 Cedar Grove Road, Jonesville, was charged Tuesday by the sheriff’s office with possession with intent to distribute crack and public intoxication. He is accused of being involved in the incident where the gun was fired at Jeter’s house.

Around 11 p.m. Monday deputies were called to 426 Whitlock Lake Road after someone reported gunshots had been fired outside the residence. En route, deputies were advised that there were active arrest warrants against Jeter.

Jeter told officers he was inside his home when he heard several gun shots outside. He looked out a window and saw Nash standing at his front door. He said Nash told him if he came outside, he would kill him. Jeter said he saw Nash leave with two other people in a red Ford Crown Victoria with big rims. Jeter said he did not believe they had shot at the house and officers were unable to locate any spent shell casings. Jeter then was told there was an active warrant on him and he was arrested.

Deputies spotted the red Ford at the intersection of West Springs Highway and Cedar Grove Road with three men inside. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the car. The front seat passenger, Kashif Nash, jumped out and ran behind a house. The driver jumped out and ran into a wooded area. The third occupant, James Nash, attempted to get out of the car but was stopped by officers. Cpl. Wendy Childers caught Nash and took him into custody. Officers asked who was driving the vehicle and both James Nash and Kashif Nash were uncooperative. Officers smelled alcohol on Kashif Nash and saw a plastic bag containing what is believed to be cocaine about 10 feet from the side of the vehicle where he had tried to run from officers.

James Nash said the bag did not belong to him.

Kashif Nash was arrested. Officers found $232 in cash on his person. This was seized, along with the Ford.

According to a report of the incident in which Jeter was charged, Kashif Nash’s father told the deputies he was lying in bed and heard a gunshot. He looked out a bedroom window and saw a man — later identified as Jeter — holding Kashif, down on the ground and pointing a gun at him. The man with the gun said, “Give me my money. I ought to kill you.”

The father said he knocked on the window and yelled and Jeter ran to the passenger side of a white SUV, which left the scene.

Kashif Nash told deputies he had been standing on the porch when the white vehicle drove into his neighbor’s yard and then drove onto his driveway. He walked toward the vehicle to see who it was and the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and pulled a gun. He said he ran towards his house and fell when the man shot at him. He said the man got on top of him and hit him in the head with the gun.

The report said the Kashif Nash had a laceration on top of his head.
