Head Coach Steve Taneyhill was not happy on Friday night as the Yellow Jackets suffered a 37-7 loss to York and Monday’s practice was likely an intense one.
“We must improve on everything,” he said. “We gave up two long touchdown passes and couldn’t get a stop in the first quarter. On offense we gave up five sacks and had five turnovers.”
Union County’s lone touchdown came late in the second quarter when quarterback, Keiston Smith hooked up with Chris Booker for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
The Cavaliers put up 28 points before the Jackets hit pay dirt and added three with a field goal before intermission. The second half was a defensive battle. An interception put York on its own twenty yard line to set up a touchdown pass on the ensuing play that rounded out the scoring.
The good news for Union County is that York is a surging 4-A program that has ranked as high as tenth on preseason polls.
Playing such high caliber teams before week one can only benefit the Jackets who will have another big test tonight with Byrnes and Wrenn.
“York is a very good team,” said Taneyhill. “Hopefully we’ll have a great practice on Monday and show improvement on Tuesday at Byrnes.”
The scrimmage, which will take place at Byrnes High school is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
Union County will participate in a jamboree on Aug. 17 at Lugoff Elgin before the highly anticipated season opener at Spartanburg on Aug. 24.
