Aug. 26, 2012, Lockhart Church of God would like to invite you to come and celebrate their 75th year. A dinner on the ground will follow the services, which will start at 10:30 am. So come and join Rev. Allen and Vickie McKee and the Church of God family. The Church of God is located at the top of N. 3rd St. and Summit Drive.

Vacation Bible School

The Lockhart Freewill Church will be finishing up their Vacation Bible School, tonight. They had a real good turnout. The theme was outdoors with tents, trees, and wild animals, of course fake.

Bake Sale

The First Baptist Church of Lockhart had a bake sale at the Lighthouse in Pacolet last Saturday.

Jacob’s Well

Don’t forget that you or your church can sponsor a bedroom at Jacob’s Well. This is a new mission at the Hope Hospital in Lockhart. I don’t have my phone numbers with me at the time, but if you call me at work (545-6652) I can give you them. The people to contact will be Don Fowler (works at Midway), Spencer Ledford, and Mitch Sinclair. This will house mission groups that come to the surrounding areas to do their work, people burned out of their homes, Bible study, Men’s Breakfast, Ladies Circle, GEDs, tutoring, pantry kitchen, clothing, counseling, children’s programs, and the list goes on. They have a lot of plans and can use volunteers. There is a mission in Kentucky just like this that some of my friends support.

Tex Ritter

When I was a little girl, you had record players that you played 45s or LPs. Well, I can remember my mother would let me play her 45s that she probably started collecting when she was a teenager. I still have them packed away. Well anyway, she had one by Tex Ritter (father of the late John Ritter) and as long as my article seems to be going religion, I’d like to share the words of this particular 45. Maybe some of the older folks will remember this, and the younger ones are asking, “What’s a 45?”

Deck Of Cards

This was during World War II. During the North African campaign, a bunch of soldier boys had been on a long hike. They arrived in a little town called Cassino, and the next day being Sunday, several of the boys went to church. After the chaplain read the prayer, the text was taken up. Those of the boys who had prayer books read them, but one boy had only a deck of cards, so he spread them out.

The sergeant who commanded the boys, saw the cards and said, “Soldier, put away those cards.”

After the service was over, the soldier was taken prisoner and brought before the provost marshal. The provost marshal said, “Sergeant, why have you brought this man here?”

“For playing cards in church, sir.”

“And what have you to say for yourself, son?”

“Much,sir,” the soldier replied.

The marshal said, “I hope so, for if not, I shall punish you severely.”

“You see sir, when I look at the ace, it reminds me there is but one God, and when I see the deuce, it reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts, the old and new testaments. And when I see the trey, I think of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. And when I see the four, I think of the four evangelists who preached the gospel. They were Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

“And when I see the five, it reminds me of the five virgins who trimmed their lamps. There were ten of them — five were wise and were saved; five were foolish and were shut out.And when I see the six, it reminds me that in six days, God made this great heaven and earth.” And when I see the seven, it reminds me that on the seventh day, God rested. When I see the eight, I think of the eight righteous persons God saved when He destroyed this Earth. These were Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives.

“When I see the nine, I think of the lepers our Savior cleansed and nine of the 10 didn’t even thank Him. When I see the ten, I think of the 10 commandments God handed to Moses on the tablet of stone. And when I see the King, it reminds me once again there is but one King of Heaven, God Almighty.And when I see the queen, I think of the blessed Virgin Mary, who is Queen of Heaven.” “And the Jack or knave is the devil.

“When I count the number of spots on a deck of cards, I find 365, the number of days in a year. There are 52 cards, the number of weeks in a year. There are 13 tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter. There are four suits, the number of weeks in a month. There are 12 picture cards, the number of months in a year.

“So you see, sir, my deck of cards has served me as a Bible, almanac, and prayer book.”

Birthdays

Gonzalee Childers and Amber Comer have a birthday Friday, the 12th of August. The 8th was Bernice Canupp’s and Sara Jane Fowler’s. William Vinson’s was the 9th. Mine’s the 17th and Amy Queen’s the 18th. If I missed any, I’m sorry, because you didn’t tell me. So let me know before next year.
