Why yes, Hank Williams, Jr. — We are ready for some football — and Union County fans will have the opportunity to see their team engage in a little combat as early as tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. when the Yellow Jackets take the field in York for the host team’s fifth annual Preseason Kickoff.
The highly anticipated attraction has a crowd pleasing format this year with two teams as opposed to four, playing four 12-minute quarters of football.
After traveling to Lancaster last Friday and Ware Shoals on Tuesday, the drive to York High School will be significantly shorter and the scrimmage will be much more telling.
Head Coach Steve Taneyhill will present a Union County team that has been ranked sixth in class 3-A preseason polls by SCVarsity.com. The Jackets return seven starters on offense including several skill players. Standout quarterback Keiston Smith is among those returning along with wide-receivers Kalay Jones and Chris Booker and all-purpose running back Treyvond Davis.
Five starters return on the defensive side of the ball including linebackers Jared Fowler and Dillon Williams and defensive end Robert Sims.
York made the transition back to 4-A for the 2012 season and have been ranked #11 in its classification after an impressive 10-0 2011 season and an eyebrow-raising playoff run.
Friday night’s contest will be a definite test for the Yellow Jackets.
Taneyhill was disappointed with his team’s performance during last Friday’s bouts with Lancaster and Mid-Carolina.
“We had four turnovers and only caused one,” he said. “The running backs looked real good but I wasn’t pleased with the team as a whole.”
However, the Jackets had a much better showing on Tuesday, giving up a touchdown early in the scrimmage before shutting down both Ware Shoals and Woodmont.
COMING SOON: The Union County football magazine, Friday Night Lights will appear in the Aug. 22 edition of The Union Daily Times. Originally scheduled to come out on the 17th, the preview of the 2012 season has been moved back a few days but will be well worth the wait!
