Solution to animal shelter problem reeks of socialism

To the editor:

The recent animal shelter fiasco has me very agitated. The evidence shows that maybe five people are really concerned about the situation, which means ten thousand more don’t care, as long as they are not being bothered by stray animals. Count me as one of those.

Of course, when television reporters show up in sack cloth and ashes, wringing their hands about the reported conditions, local officials, who have no more backbone than an octopus, try to appease them by promising investigations and improvements. Mr. Warner then picks up their banner in his column with a plea for a complete new facility. to pay for this, he suggests adding to everyone’s tax assessment, since it would only add ten or fifteen dollars a year to their tax bill. That is the true Socialist view of every situation. Take from the majority to pay for pacification of the minority. The solution to every problem is to add a new tax. As the list grows, ten dollars here and twenty dollars there, the end result is two or three hundred dollars tacked onto the bill every year.

South Carolina is at, or near, the top of the unemployment figures. Union County is at the top of the state figures. People are rightly concerned about buying food, clothing, paying medical bills and heating their home. The prospect of providing a luxury accommodation for stray animals with additional taxes is not high on their priority list.

Your editorial, appealing to people to take personal responsibility for their animals, was a waste of space. The only true solution is for our timid public officials to quit worrying about losing popularity, and maybe a few votes, and pass some animal control ordinances that have some bit instead of bark. Impose some substantial fines on the people who let their animals roam and breed freely. Have a license fee at a level that only true animals lovers would be willing to pay. If PETA and Mr. Small are so concerned, let them pay the bill.

If Mr. Warner wants to be an advocate, he should pick some organization like, perhaps, Union County Council on Aging. Mr. Black and his associates struggle to provide services to a group of PEOPLE with very limited resources for food, clothing, shelter and transportation. They have to do this with ever-shrinking resources due to budget cuts resulting from the economic situation and a less than caring attitude from politicians.

I do not own an animal. I am not willing to pay one extra cent in taxes to pamper mongrel dogs!

Web site causing a stir

To the editor:

It is truly amazing that www.TimeForTruthinUnionSC.com, a little ol’ Union grass roots and homegrown web page, can create such a fuss – a curious and impelling interest by many and condemnation by a few rich elite and status quo. I’m glad the esteemed managing editor Graham Williams and staff writer Anna Brown of The Union Daily Times find it interesting enough to comment on it as in the “Be positive not negative” article, Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, and “I’m thankful that I live in Union County,” Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009. That’s positive and very interesting! The web page must be making a difference and causing some discomfort amongst the status quo! Yes, some very important people do quietly visit the web page on a regular schedule.

You would think after almost eight months, it would have faded by now. But quite the contrary. Even less the drama of the mayor getting indicted, the web page lives on and its viewership and contents are steadily growing.

As for this contributor, one of many, I do my homework and research, and make no excuse nor attempt to hide from my views … I am proud to publicly announce that I have and will continue to contribute to the web page as I have contributed to The Union Daily Times. I am grateful to live in America where all Americans have the freedom to have and voice their views. I honorably served my country to protect this right for all Americans including you, Mr. Williams and Mrs. Brown. As far as signing one’s name, it’s a common practice on many web pages that there is no name attached to blogs, for security and privacy purposes. To paraphrase: judge me on the content of my character, not my name or the position I hold.

Mr. Williams and Mrs. Brown, I’m sure you and everyone else are welcomed, by the Webmaster (who ever that is?), to post your views. I encourage you and others interested in Union and its progress to continue to view and post on the “Time for Truth” web page. I only wish you could practice what you preach and see the positives of the web page and all the people who freely participate in it.
