The summer heat has not prevented the Union County Miracle League from making sure that special needs children and adults in Union County will have the chance to play baseball on a safe, low-impact field very soon. To make this dream a reality, the organization is planning a fundraiser featuring the University of South Carolina Athletic Director and former baseball coach, Ray Tanner, as a keynote speaker. The fundraiser is planned for Aug. 15 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.
Since the creation of the Miracle League of Union County in July 2010, the organization has elected a board, become a member of the national Miracle League, applied for 501(c)3 status, received the donation of a field from Union County Council and approved the drawings of a low-impact field to be modified at Timken Sports Complex. Now the Miracle League is focusing on fund raising to complete the next and final stage of the project: construction.
In order for the field to be constructed, the Miracle League must raise close to $250,000. And thanks to this hard working Miracle League Fundraising Committee, they will do just that.
The committee met last Monday in the home of Mr. Thomas Sinclair to sample the BBQ menu for the Aug. 15 fundraiser and give each other updates on preparations for the event.
As of Wednesday evening, BB&T Bank, the Union County Council, Frank and Candy Humphries, and Matt and Amy Pittman have committed to purchasing tables for the fundraiser meal. Amy Austin, MLUC Coordinator, says, “What an awesome way to spend an evening with your family while helping dreams come true for so many children and adults right here in our own back yard. That is what family is all about — teaching your children and grandchildren how important it is to be involved in the community and help others.”
In addition to these commitments, Angie Stalnaker, Miracle League Board Chairman, says that the Clemson Club has committed to hosting their own fundraiser to support the Miracle League of Union County. Also, the Rotary Club of Union has agreed to help with fund raising and preliminary paperwork has been drafted for a Rotary Foundation Grant to support the Miracle League’s efforts.
A grant proposal has also been submitted to the Timken Foundation. The Junior Charity League and Buffalo Seafood also made large donations at the beginning of the year, along with many other individuals, churches, organizations and businesses within Union County. Union County has committed approximately $60,000 to this low impact field and the City of Union has come on board to help with the in-kind services such as utility installation and upkeep.
