So sorry about last week. I heard from a lot of you wondering where I was. I was asleep!

I guess when you stay up late every night it finally catches up with you. For some reason I never noticed the computer that night, but when I looked in the mirror the next morning it dawned on me what I did not do — write! I tried to get sympathy from my daughter, and all she said was, “I told you not to wait until the last minute to write.”

Churches

The Presbyterian Church on Lockhart Drive is getting a new roof this week, after hail damage. They’ve got a lot of guys over there working.

Someone said it was the first church in Lockhart. Ailene told us today that it started out as a Community Church, that everyone went to. It was built in 1896. After that the Baptists broke off and built their church. Then she said that a lot of people eventually moved here from around the mountains to work in the mill, and they were Freewill Baptist. So some of the Baptist men were asked to build the Freewill Church before they moved here so they would have their own church.

It’s wonderful that Ailene has so much love for Lockhart that she remembers so many wonderful details.

Visitor

Sophie was visiting her grandparents, Cheryl and Gregg McCollum, this last weekend and came into the shop on their way to visit Uncle Tommy. I believe she said that last Saturday was her grandmother Lucie Wentz’s birthday.

Eventful Trip

Laura Dabbs is back from the beach with quite a few wounds. Seems that Zack took a u-turn and didn’t warn her, and she fell off of the golf cart. She was pretty skinned up. She also had to go to the ER when she tripped over a cable at the camper, but nothing was broke. See, camping is dangerous.

Doing A Split

Well, I now know that I can do the splits, and I was never a cheerleader in high school. I’m just a bug killer.

I was out on my porch at 1 a.m. and I saw a bug moving very fast, so I decided that I could be faster. So I stuck my foot out to get it and my foot kept sliding until one leg was backwards and the other was forward. I think I scraped the bug off of my butt instead of my shoe.

I got up and hoped everyone was in bed and did not see, they might think I was practicing for the Olympic gymnastic team. I did not get any sympathy from my daughter again. I think she thinks I should just behave and just be a calm, easygoing person, instead of always being in a hurry and into everything. I’ve always lived with controlling people, my mother and my husband, and since being on my own, I think I get crazy first and think later.

Now I’m off to see the chiropractor, Dr. Bridgett Sherman, whom I feel sorry for, because she always has to put me back together. It seems every time I walk in it’s always for something new, I’m supposed to be having a few treatments for the same old thing, but I just keep finding new things. Did I ever tell you, she really can get rid of headaches. I hope I can stay put together while she’s at the beach, Aug. 13-19.

A Nice Experience

I was on a mission Monday and saw the door open at Ben Ivey’s Appliance Store, so I stopped, and met the nicest, friendliest lady, Lynn Ivey, wife of Ben. I found out she is a cousin to the Lockhart Brannons. I just had the best time talking to her.

So if you are in the market for an appliance, you need to drop in and see them. She said if you want something they don’t have in the store, they’ll order it for you. I also noticed on the other side of the store they have consignment furniture. One day, when I’m back in the neighborhood, I’ll have to check that out.

President

Aileen mentioned to me that she’d like me to take over as President of the Festival of Lights in Lockhart, so it’s a lot to think about, if I do I really would like to get more members to help the few that do so much work getting ready for Christmas. What do you think? Oh I’d have to be elected first. So the other members may have other ideas, instead of me. Well it’s something to think about.

Birthdays

Happy Belated Birthday to Mert Young on the 30th of July, Jason Childers on the 28th. Then on the 1st of August Ricky Farr, Monty Allen on the 2nd of August, Katie Adamson the 3rd, Jessica Pettit on the 4th. Then Happy Birthday today, the 5th, to Mardene Matthews and Larry Tyler. Jay Voiselle’s is the 6th, and William Vinson’s is the 9th.

Anniversaries

Shane and Jennifer Allen on the 5th, Charlotte and Marvin on the 2nd, Linda and Jimmy Williams on the 8th, and Ted and Marva Garner on the 9th.

New Minister

Lockhart Methodist and Wesley Chapel have a new minister, her name is Rev. Donna Eidson. I had the pleasure of meeting her and it seemed like I’d known her forever. She is very warm and friendly. I heard that she came from Rev. Alan Quarles’ Church, so she probably got the rundown on everyone before she got here. Of course it all had to be good, because what could Alan say about us except anything good!

A Scottish Response

A month after Donald MacDonald started at Harvard, his mother called from Scotland.

“And how are the American students, Donald?” she asked.

“They’re so noisy,” he complained. “One neighbor endlessly bangs his head against the wall, while another screams all night.”

“How do you put up with it?”

“I just ignore them and play my bagpipes.”

Water Hose Problem

What about this weather? I went out the other night, about midnight, to water my plants, and had to fight with the garden hose. Because of the extreme hot weather, my hose was flat in places that had been wound up. The water didn’t want to go through, so I kept trying to push the hose open in those places. Then I’d go to the nozzle to see if the water was running, and of course not, so I’d go look for another flat place, and so on and so on, for it seemed over a half hour. Finally! I discovered that beside the flat places, I did not have my water turned on at the house. Well it was late!

Very Busy

Well I’m working on getting two places ready to rent out. A 3-room apartment and a 6-room house. So that’s something for me to do on my days off, also. I used to complain about being bored, but now I don’t have a chance to be bored. Thanks to Ailene! If she has to stay busy, she wants everyone to be busy also.

Well, I’m sure there wasn’t much news in this, but it’s all I’ve got. I have an old article to pass on to all of you, but now I’ve put it somewhere for safe keeping, FROM ME! Maybe next week. Well I’ll say goodnight. 545-6652
