Marcus Lott is a prime example of what one can accomplish through perseverance and determination. The Union native graduated from Coastal Carolina with a 3.86 GPA in middle school studies and was set to begin teaching at Loris Middle School, but he’ll put those plans on hold as he tries to make the New York Jets roster. Lott, a safety, signed with the Jets on Thursday and has already joined the team at training camp in Cortland, NY.

“Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something,” said Lott. “If you have a dream, go out and achieve it.”

Lott is taking his own advice and pursuing his dream to compete in the NFL.

After an impressive collegiate career at Coastal with 184 tackles and five interceptions, Lott was invited to mini-camps with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins.

However, when he was passed over by the NFL, Lott accepted a teaching position in Horry County.

“I feel like the kids at the middle school level are the ones that I could help the most,” Lott said. “That’s the age they are most influential. It’s really one of the last times you can reach the kids because there are so many bad influences out there that by high school, it may be too late.”

Now that he’s been offered another chance to break into the NFL, Lott will take it with gratitude. While camp has kept him busy over the past couple of days, Lott took a moment to update his supporters through facebook.

“Blessed with the opportunity to become a Jet!! God is awesome. This road will be tough and I haven’t made it yet. I pray that God will just continue to guide my path, and give me the necessities to complete this journey.. Blessed beyond recognition!!!”

So, he will continue to fight for his dream, and we will continue to be inspired.
