An elderly Buffalo woman died in a two-car accident Tuesday morning.

Ruby Stevens Varner, 87, 155 Riley Road, was killed when her Chevy Lumina was struck by a Ford Expedition at the intersection of Industrial Park Road and Rice Avenue Extension. The Expedition was driven by Jose Mendoza Jr. who, along with his father, Jose Mendoza Sr., was driving toward Union on Industrial Park Road. Residents of Grover, N.C., the Mendozas were taken to Wallace Thomson Hospital where they were treated and released.

PFC Randy Canupp said the accident occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. Canupp said that based on the position of her car and information provided by the Mendozas, Mrs. Varner was apparently trying to make a left turn onto Rice Avenue Extension. He said Mrs. Varner failed to stop for a stop sign and was struck by the Mendozas’ vehicle.

Public Safety Chief Sam White said that while they don’t occur very often, accidents at that intersection tend to result in severe damage to vehicles. He said until now there had been no fatalities at that intersection since it has been in the city.

Traffic is expected to increase at the intersection once the new Timken Park Sports Complex is completed.
