A grand prize and other prizes will be awarded and barbecue sold when the Union County Carnegie Library holds the Adult Summer Reading Final Event Tuesday afternoon.
Each summer, the library offers reading programs for children and teenagers. This year, the library also offered the Adult Summer Reading program which, like those for children and teenagers, encouraged participants to read on their own. It also encouraged those with families to read with their children. In addition to reading, the program also provided participants with a variety of craft activities including crocheting.
The program also provided participants with an opportunity to win prizes each week in the form of coupons provided by local businesses such as McDonald’s and Dairi-O. To qualify for one of the seven prizes awarded weekly, a participant had to write a brief description of how they liked the book they’d read. In addition to the coupons, tote bags were also given as prizes. Three of each week’s winners receive a tote bag while the other four received a coupon from either McDonald’s or Dairi-O
The names were drawn each Wednesday by members of the Union Rotary Club which provided funding for the tote bags and materials used in the crafts classes. Rotary donated $2,500 to the library which was used to purchase materials for the Adult Summer Reading Program as well as books for general use by the library’s adult patrons.
The library also received $1,000 from Wal-Mart for the Adult Summer Reading Program.
The Adult Summer Reading Program concludes today, but participants who are still reading their books will be able to submit their forms Monday to be included in the Grand Prize Drawing which will take place Tuesday.
The Grand Prize Drawing will be part of a celebration that will be held at the library from 4-5 p.m. During the celebration, the library will be selling barbecue provided by Lancaster Big Oak BBQ. The barbecue, which will be takeout only, is being sold to help raise funds for future activities and new materials at the library.
During the celebration, there will be drawings for door prizes for those who participated in the program. They will be selected from the entry forms submitted during duration of the program. The door prizes will be coupons from McDonald’s, Dairi-O and Pizza Hut.
Library staff will tally the number of books read by each participant to determine who read the most books. Prizes will be award to those the five participants who read the most. They will each receive a Wal-Mart gift card.
There will then be a Grand Prize Drawing with the winner receiving a Barnes & Noble E-Reader “Nook.”
Participants, however, must be present to win.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, the staff of the Union County Carnegie Library “wishes to thank all of our sponsors for making this year’s Adult Summer Reading Program such a success.”
