The Timken Sports Complex looks to introduce three new leagues this September.
Timken Sports Complex Associate Director Dolton Williams said there have been many people in the community who have expressed interest in fall leagues, particularly a youth boys league, a youth girls league and a men’s softball league.
Williams discussed the need for the boys and girls youth leagues.
“We feel that this will give the youth of Union County a chance to further enhance their skills in a game that they love,” Williams said. “It will also give them a chance to play here in their hometown in front of their family and friends.”
Williams mentioned that several local teams play in fall leagues but have to travel to neighboring counties in order to play. He said this will help cut down on travel and hopefully give an opportunity to kids who aren’t able to travel so far away. The age groups for the youth league will be the same as Dixie Leagues.
Williams said he is just as excited about the prospect of a men’s softball league at Timken Sports Complex.
“The men’s softball league is a chance to sustain good wholesome competition,” he said. “I have been asked several times about the development of a men’s league here in Union County. It will allow the players to keep playing the game that they love, and also not have to travel out of town to play. This league would give the players a chance to take a break after church league and then start playing beginning in September.”
TSC intends to have all three leagues begin during the first week of September.
A meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 6, at 5 p.m. to answer any questions potential participants or parents may have, and registration will begin that afternoon. Williams said all interested players, parents, coaches and umpires are welcome to attend the meeting. He said the leagues will be dependent on the number of players and teams that show interest.
