USC Union hosted the second of three orientations for new students in the university’s auditorium on Tuesday.
The program covered pertinent information from various university faculty and staff. Director of Financial Aid Bobby Holcombe gave an overview of financial aid, including policies and scholarship information. Director of Admissions Brad Greer explained to students how to register for classes online following advisement.
Campus Security Officer Tony Gregory discussed safety, security and parking procedures, reminding students that they will need their Carolina Cards to be admitted into university events or to check out library books. Continuing Education Administrative Assistant Brittany Moss explained business office procedures and how students should pay their bills.
Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) Career Transfer Counselor John Crocker gave students an overview of OSP workshops taking place during the upcoming semester, which will focus on topics such as academic policies and procedures, time management, writing, exam preparation and stress management. He also discussed the Peer Mentor Tutors (PMT) program, as well as laptop and calculator rental.
Following the orientation program, university advisors’ offices were busy with students who were preparing for the upcoming fall semester. Advisors guided students through the process of choosing the courses they needed most and registering for those courses online.
One student who registered for classes on Tuesday was Crystal Jeter — a second-year USC Union student. Jeter attended classes at USC Union during the 2010-2011 school year. She is a member of the Air Force Reserves, and she is working toward an associate degree.
Jeter said she enjoys attending USC Union because it is close to her family and the tuition is low.
“The professors and advisors are friendly and willing to help,” Jeter said. “They do more with you one-on-one than in a larger school.”
Although Jeter has not firmly decided on a major, she said she is leaning toward nursing and hopes to transfer to USC Upstate after earning her associate degree.
A third orientation for new students will be held on Aug. 14, and classes begin on Aug. 23.
