CARLISLE — Residents of the Town of Carlisle will soon have the option of disposing of their recyclables and other household waste at a recycling convenience center located in the town.
Union County Supervisor Tommy Sinclair announced Tuesday that the county has received three grants totaling $100,000 which it will use to finish construction of a recycling convenience center in the Town of Carlisle. The facility, which will be located off SC 215 inside the town, will be the latest step in the implementation of a countywide recycling convenience program initiated by the county more than a decade ago.
“Over the last 10-12 years, Union County began developing recycling centers,” Sinclair said. “Before there was just dumpsters throughout the county that people just put any type of waste in. The dumpsters were unattended.
“So Union County has transitioned to recycling centers throughout the county,” he said. “Unlike the dumpsters they are attended and are set up so recyclable materials and other waste can be disposed of separately.”
There are currently 10 recycling convenience centers located throughout Union County including the Bonham center on SC 18; the center on the Old Landfill Road off Neal Shoals Road; in Santuc on Suber Lane; in Lockhart on Old Union Road; in Jonesville on Long Avenue; in Kelly-Kelton on Mt. Joy Church Road; in Buffalo on John Hart Road; at the Union County Airport on Sardis Road; in Cross Keys on SC 49; and in Union on South Pinckney Street. The centers accept a variety of recyclable materials including plastic jugs and bottles; aluminum; corrugated cardboard; newspaper, magazines and other paper; carpets, used motor oil; metal products; antifreeze; cooking oil; and thermostats containing mercury. All of the centers except the one on South Pinckney Street also accept household garbage.
An 11th center to be located in Carlisle was planned and construction started but has never been completed. Sinclair said the grants the county received from DHEC will enable it to complete the facility.
“A recycling center was started in Carlisle some years ago,” Sinclair said. “Those grants along with $15,000-20,000 in county funds will help finish building that recycling center.”
Sinclair said it is hoped that construction will resume within the next few weeks and the facility be in operation by mid-fall.
Carlisle’s recycling convenience center will be different from all the others except the Cross Keys facility. Union County Public Work Director John Gibson said the center in Carlisle, like that in Cross Keys, will be designed to make it easier for the public to dispose of their recyclables and household waste.
“It’s more user friendly, whatever you’ve got to deposit, it may be construction debris, it may be metal, it may be household waste, you will be able to drive up and deposit the items over a wall into the container,” Gibson said. “You won’t have to lift it up to dispose of it. You’ll just walk over and drop it into the container.”
Carlisle Mayor Mary Ferguson-Glenn welcomed the announcement that work on the convenience center will resume and that the facility will soon begin serving the people of Carlisle.
“It’s been seven years in the works,” Ferguson-Glenn said. “It’s great news that it’s finally going to be completed.”
