On May 26, Union native and Charleston Southern University student Davey West took first place in one category at the Third Annual Southeastern Beard and Moustache Championships in Charleston.

The event is organized by the Holy City Beard & Moustache Society, which was founded in 2007. Each year, the society hosts the championships in Charleston, raising thousands of dollars for Lowcountry Women with Wings (Rising Above Ovarian Cancer). Lowcountry Women with Wings — established by ovarian cancer patient Terry Scharstein — provides education and support services to women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, their caregivers and families.

The competition includes 16 different categories, two of which fall under the Ladies Artificial class.

West won first place in the “College Beard” category.

West got the idea to participate from one of his professors who told him that clothes and overall appearance would be a factor in the judging. West decided to wear the suit his dad wore when he married his mother. West is 21 — the same age his father was on the day of the wedding.

“The baby blue suit looked really good with his red hair!” said his mother, Tammy West.

The Holy City Beard & Moustache Society represents Charleston on the national and international beard circuit, competing across the U.S. Because of the society’s contribution to the thousands of cancer patients in the Lowcountry, Charleston’s Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. proclaimed May 26, 2012 as Beard and Moustache Appreciation Day.
