COLUMBIA — Three local health care providers have been recognized for their achievements in promoting and improving employee safety.
The Palmetto Hospital Trust (PHT) announced that Wallace Thomson Hospital was one of seven South Carolina health care organizations recognized as winners of the PHT Most Improved Safety Award while Ellen Sagar Nursing Home was one of 10 health care organizatons recognized as winners of the PHT Safety Award. The hospital and the nursing home together with Carolinas Health Associates were also among the 14 winners of the PHT Transitional Duty Award.
Wallace Thomson was the winner of both the Improved Safety and Transitional Duty awards in the category of hospitals with 101-200 beds. The hospital is licensed for 143 beds.
Ellen Sagar won both awards in the category Long-Term Care Facilities while the Carolinas Health Associates physician network won the Transitional Duty Award in the category of Other Facilities.
Most Improved Safety Awards are presented to PHT members with the largest reductions in loss ratio from 2010-2011 in their respective categories. Safety Awards are presented each year to PHT members with the lowest loss ratios in their respective categories. Trust members eligible to win the Transitional Duty Award are those required to maintain an OSHA log, and the winners are the PHT members with the best/highest ratio of transitional duty to no lost work days in their respective categories.
The winners of the Safety and Transitional Duty awards were recognized during the June 15 PHT General Membership meeting in Columbia. The meeting was attended by health care professionals from around the state.
Union Hospital District CEO Tim Merritt said the awards are a result and recognition of the district’s continuing commitment to and emphasis on improving patient and staff safety.
“It’s part of our ongoing efforts to ensure quality patient care and safety to all those that come in contact with our organization,” Merrit said. “We talk about this and have training exercises. If you recall when we had the bomb situation we were able to defuse that because of our constant training and in-service to the staff emphasizing safety and ways to improve ourself. By receiving these awards we are proud to be recognized for our efforts.”
The Union Hospital District employs more than 700 personnel including the staff of Wallace Thomson Hospital, Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Carolinas Health Associates, and Union County EMS.
