Members of the Union County football team will board a bus on Thursday morning in route to Altoona, Pennsylvania for a 7 on 7 tournament.

Coach Steve Taneyhill chose Altoona not only because it’s his hometown, or just to give his team the opportunity to compete against schools that it normally wouldn’t see, but also as a reward for doing well throughout the month of June.

And the Jackets have done well, although Taneyhill believes there is always room for improvement.

Union County had an impressive showing against 4-A Byrnes during a 7 on 7 passing tournament held at Beech Springs Intermediate School in Duncan two weeks ago, scoring often and picking off a number of Rebels passes.

Last Tuesday, the Jackets went 4-1 at Laurens and then participated in a 7 on 7 in Lexington on Friday where they went 8-1, defeating Lexington for the championship.

Taneyhill is counting on his team to continue playing high caliber football once they get to Pennsylvania.

“I don’t know who we’re playing for sure but I expect us to build on our win at Lexington and play well,” he said.
