A Union man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday after a jury found him guilty of selling drugs.

Clifford Johnson, 53, of 135 Johnson Road was convicted of distribution of crack cocaine. Johnson’s trial lasted a day and the jury deliberated about 30 minutes before giving the verdict.

According to a report, Lt. John Sherfield with the Union County Sheriff’s Office provided an operative with $60 and the operative went to Johnson’s house and bought crack from him. Johnson was arrested on Sept. 4, 2007.

Deputy Solicitor John Anthony said when Circuit Judge John C. Hayes III sentenced Johnson, Hayes characterized Johnson as being a crack house operator.

“He apparently felt from the way Mr. Johnson was operating his home that he should be sentenced to the maximum,” Anthony said.

Johnson’s past record including a conviction for marijuana possession in 1996 and a weapons violation in the 1970s.
