After a week off, Union Post 22 hit the field on Wednesday and grabbed a 9-7 win over Inman. The following night, the Senior Legion team fell short in a 2-0 loss to Gaffney but rebounded with a 13-8 victory over Spartanburg on Friday.
Recus Hughes was the winning pitcher on Wednesday night and helped himself at the plate with two singles and a walk.
Adam Lawson was 2-2 with two doubles and and two walks while Bubba Means was 2-2 with two singles and two walks. Devontae Glenn and Josh Simpson each singled twice, Nate Williford smacked a double and a single and Jake Walton contributed a single.
On Thursday night, Union Post 22 were edged out by Gaffney, 2-0, with both runs coming in the first inning.
“After that first inning, it went back and forth,” said coach Tommy Ford. “One, two, three for each team in each inning.”
Friday’s win over Spartanburg included big knocks from Josh Simpson and Jack Arthur, who each went yard on the Spartanburg pitching staff.
Union collected six of its 13 runs in the first inning and continued to pile it on for the remaining six.
Simpson picked up the win from the mound and Seth Osbourne got the save. “Josh got in a little trouble in the fourth inning,” said Ford. “We brought in Seth and he didn’t allow another run for the rest of the ballgame. He shut them down.”
Ford was pleased with the team’s performance on Friday, with players stepping up off the bench.
“We showed up with 10 guys — Some of our guys had gone out of town,” said Ford. “We had some guys come off the bench and play really well for us.”
Senior Legion action continued Monday night as Post 22 traveled to Gaffney. See Wednesday’s edition of the Union Daily Times for a game summary.
