Scholarship Recipient

Shirley Mitchell, Foster Park Elementary School PTO Secretary,presents the Foster Park Eagle Scholarship to Kristen Whitener. Kristen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Whitener. Kristen received her scholarship during the 5th grade Awards Day at Foster Park Elementary School. Kristen spoke to the 5th graders and encouraged them to take school seriously and always do their best. The Eagle Scholarship is presented each year to a UCHS senior who attended Foster Park for their entire elementary school years. The candidates also write an essay about their elementary school experiences. The pieces of writing are judged by a committee. Kristen wrote about how Foster Park inspired her to be good student. The funds for the $1,000 scholarship are raised by the school and consist of private donations, fundraisers, and PTO sponsorship.

UNION HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1992 will host their 20th reunion June 22-24. Final registration deadline will be May 26 at Quality Inn, Duncan Bypass. You must register and pay in full to attend the reunion.

SIMS HIGH CLASS OF 1966 committee members will have a meeting at Foster Park at 7 p.m. in Shelter #4 to finalize plans for the class reunion. Business of importance. Contact Charles G. Gist.

JUNE 25

SUMMER DRAMA CAMP will be held at Union County High School for ages 6-12, June 25-29, 9 a.m.-noon with instructor Ralph Lawson. Register and pay fees at Union County Arts Council, Main Street. Proceeds benefit UCHS drama department. For information call 429-2817 or 427-1709.

THE UNION COUNTY SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB will meet June 26 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church fellowship hall at 6 p.m. for their annual Hot Dog Supper. This is for members only. Mrs. Amy House will provide the entertainment.

JUNE 27

THE UNION COUNTY RECREATION DEPARTMENT is seeking vendors for the annual Independence Celebration at Foster Park, July 3, 2012. Each vendor must pay a vending fee and have a city permit. One-day permits may be purchase at the City of Union Municipal Building. Limited spaces are available. Please register at the Union County Recreation Department by Wednesday June 27. The recreation department is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. For more information contact Union County Recreation Department Program Director Jessica Gallman at 429-1670.

A YOUTH SUMMER ART CAMP will be held at the Union County Arts Council on Main Street in Union. It will run daily through July 27 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The camp will be led by Angie Craft and will introduce the campers to the art of gourding (making objects of art from the common gourd). A VETERANS ADVOCATE is in Union every third Friday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the One Stop, 440 Duncan Hwy., to discuss eligibility for health care, pension, disability and more.

THE NEW EMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH has opened a free clothes closet in the back of the Municipal Building in Jonesville. Hours of operation will be Tuesday and Friday 9:30 a.m.-noon.
