The two Union Junior Legion teams, the original Post 22 and the newly formed Legionnaires, faced off Friday night in a battle that came down to the final inning with Post 22 emerging victorious.
After trailing for five and a half innings, Post 22 tied the game at 5-5 with a two-RBI double courtesy of Josh Gass and then took the lead when David Roper lined to left center, scoring Gass.
The Legionnaires rallied in the sixth and knotted things back up at 6-6 when CJ Kershaw singled and scored on a sacrifice fly. However, Post 22 fought back in the bottom of the inning with Khadarius Dean blasting a 2-RBI hit into left field to reclaim the lead, 7-6.
The Legionnaires threatened in the seventh with hits from Drekus Smith and Jermaine Lindsay but Post 22 held them off and captured the win.
Pitching woes continued for Post 22 and the Legionnaires added to their 2-1 lead in the top of the second with Lindsay and Buddy Hardy each scoring off passed balls.
Phillip Arnold helped Post 22 to cut the Legionnaires’ lead in half in the third inning, stealing his way home after a rip up the middle.
Both teams tacked on a single run in the fourth to carry a 5-3 score into the fifth where the Legionnaires’ received base runners when Smith drew a walk and Tony Waters reached off an error. However, a ground out ended the inning with both runners in scoring position and Post 22 found new life on offense, clawing their way back to a 7-6 win.
The two will meet for a re-match on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Field 5 of the Timken Complex.
