Despite the pouring rain on Tuesday morning, the Union County football team loaded a bus and made the trip to Greenwood for its first opportunity to see how they stack up against opponents from other schools.
Although no score was kept, Coach Steve Taneyhill said it was a good learning experience and that, had a score been tallied, the Jackets would have probably won all four games.
“My guys, due to lack of experience playing in passing tournaments, learned a lot,” reported Taneyhill. “With three days of games coming next week, Tuesday at Greenwood was good for us.”
The rain continued throughout the entire scrimmage, but the Jackets had come to play and the weather wouldn’t deter them.
While the team likely won each bout against its competition, there is always room for improvement and Taneyhill demands that his players learn from every mistake.
On the offensive side of the ball, Taneyhill said that the quarterbacks are still learning and that there were some missed touchdowns which his team can ill afford and also a few dropped passes by wide receivers. The good news is that according to Taneyhill, the players are getting more and more comfortable with their routes.
On defense, the Jackets struggled a bit on Tuesday.
“We gave up too many one-play drives,” said Taneyhill. “We are still working in some different coverages so they made some mental errors, which are unacceptable.”
Union County is back on the practice field following Tuesday’s outing, ironing out the kinks and gearing up for more competition which will come as soon as next week.
The Jackets will be facing some tough competition from the east coast with a 7 on 7 versus Lancaster next Thursday at UCHS followed by a tournament at Byrnes High School on Friday and Saturday, during which Taneyhill believes his team will find out where they stand.
