Led by playwright/director Mary Owens, a group of players known as The Chosen Few will present an original gospel stage play entitled “Mothers Won’t Be Crying Up In Heaven” at Pacolet Elementary School this Saturday, June 2, at 5 p.m. All proceeds from the play will go toward the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church building fund.
Although the subject matter and situations in “Mothers Won’t Be Crying Up In Heaven” are serious, those involved promise that the audience can also expect an evening of laughter and entertainment.
With a cast of 21, this play depicts characters with problems such as drug addiction, prostitution, alcoholism and rebellious children.
The story shows the struggle of a character — only referred to as “Mama” — who has four rebellious children. Of the four, the most rebellious is a character named Havena — played by Janie Gist. During the play, Havena makes numerous bad decisions, and eventually searches for redemption. The play also features a theme song, “Walk Around Heaven.”
Owens said she invites everyone to attend Saturday’s play, as audience members may be able to relate to many of its situations.
“All mothers have trials and tribulations with their children,” Owens said. “When mothers go to heaven, there won’t be tears — just joy, peace and happiness. The worries of the world will be washed away.”
