City to make infrastructure improvements

The City of Union will spend nearly $300,000 to upgrade segments of its water and sewer systems later this year.

Union City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to award the bid for water and sewer improvements to Anders Inc. of Easley for $223,815. The improvements will include:

• The installation of 208 linear feet of 8-inch PVC pipe on Tillman Street. In addition to the installation of the pipe itself, the project will also include tying it into an existing manhole and into existing service lines; the addition of stone bedding for stabilization; the cutting and replacement of pavement; and the resurfacing of the street. The project is budgeted at $26,130.

• The replacement of an existing manhole off Church Street. The project will also include tying the new manhole to existing sewer lines; replacement of a six-inch PVC line; stone back fill; and the cutting and replacement of pavement. The project is budgeted at $17,500.

• The installation of a steel H-Pile Pier on Medical Science Drive. The project will also include the realignment of an existing eight-inch sewer line and restoration of a washed out embankment with 125 tons of stone. The project is budgeted at $29,125.

• The abandonment of a water line off Louise Street. The project will include plugging and cutting an existing six-inch water line; installation of a new two-inch blow off; removal the existing blow off and capping the water line; stone back fill; and the cutting and replacement of pavement. The project is budgeted at $3,400.

• The abandonment of a water line on SC 49 and Sims Avenue. The project will include cutting and plugging a six-inch water line at the valve; cutting a six-inch water line and installing a two-inch blow off; stone back fill; cutting and replacing pavement. The project is budgeted at $3,350.

• The raising of manhole near Wal-Mart. The project will include installing a 48-rise at the existing manhole and placing back fill and planting of grass at all disturbed areas. The project is budgeted at $1,500.

• The repair of washouts behind the old Wal-Mart. The project will include reshaping creek banks and placing rip-rap with fabric at two locations. The project is budgeted at $3,900.

• The replacement of 10 fire hydrants at various locations throughout the city. In addition to the installation of new hydrants, the project will also include the planting of grass at all disturbed areas; cutting the existing 6-inch lead and installing a six-inch valve with box and pre-cast ring in grassed areas; installation of six-inch megaplugs; installation of 6-inch by 6-inch, eight-inch by six-inch and 10-inch by six-inch tapping sleeves and values with boxes; stone back fill; cutting and replacing pavement; and cutting and replacing sidewalk. The project is budgeted at $49,025.

• The replacement of six-inch, eight-inch and 16-inch valves. The project will the replacement of an existing 16-inch gate valve with a 16-inch butterfly valve with box; installation of 16-inch long sleeves; installation of 16-inch megaplugs; installation of a six-inch cutting-in sleeve and value with box; installation of an eight-inch cutting-in sleeve and valve with box; stone back fill; cutting and replacing pavement. The project is budgeted at $72,770.

• Improvements at the Tosch’s Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project will include removal of an existing 12-inch plug valve and its replacement with a new 12-inch plug valve with box; removal of an existing eight-inch value and its replacement with a new eight-inch plug valve with box; installation of 12-inch short sleeves and eight-inch long sleeves; installation of eight-inch and 12-inch megaplugs; stone back fill; cutting and replacing pavement; repairing concrete at the bridge decks at the aeration basin; and repouring concrete steps. The project is budgeted at $17,115.

Council also voted unanimously Tuesday to award the bid for cleaning the sewer outfall at the Tosch’s Creek facility to Bio-Nomic Services for $54,254.50. The project will involve the use of high-pressure cleaning and removal of sediment in the sewer system.

Work on all the projects is expected to get underway within the next five to six weeks.
