Every month a group from Victory Baptist Church goes to Ellen Sager Nursing Home to sing and preach to the residents there. We always have a good time ministering and working for our Lord. This past Tuesday the Lord really spoke to my heart as Preacher Ken Holcombe brought a powerful message entitled, “The Fire of God.” I feel led to share some of what he preached in hopes it will encourage you as it did me.
Part of the passage of scripture for the message is found in Psalm 104:4, “Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire.” I would like to pose to you a couple of questions. First, have you been born-again, saved by the blood of Jesus? If you have, then are you on fire for God? These two questions are important in this life.
The first question deals with your eternal abode and the second question deals with your fellowship with God and others eternal dwelling. Now let me warn you, when you get on fire for Jesus, the devil doesn’t like that. I can personally attest to this! He will attack you from every angle and do his best to put the fire out. He has seen what happens when the fire falls and he will do whatever it takes to discourage, damage, and dim your fire from burning bright for Jesus. But friend be reminded, this life is short and eternity isn’t far away. What men may say on this side pales in comparison to what Jesus will say in eternity.
When you are a flaming, fiery minister, you are a light for Jesus. Others in this world who are lost in darkness need to see the light. God has given us the privilege to be a light in order to show others the love of God. We can’t save anyone. That is the work of God. But we should burn so bright that others see what God has done in our lives. A flaming, fiery minister dispels darkness. The brighter the light, the less darkness encompasses around us. Darkness is emblematic of sin and evilness. Light is symbolic of clarity and illumination. The fact is when we shine very bright, others see Jesus in a clearer way. When we are discouraged and downtrodden, our light dims, burning low and the darkness closes in on us. There are too many Christians whose fire is nothing more than glowing embers. Sure people may know you are saved but they don’t see any fire. We need to become bonfires for Jesus. We need to be bright fires that will draw people to us and drives back the insects and serpents of sin.
How is your fire? I’m excited because we’ve got a church on fire, people on fire, and a God who will answer with the Holy Ghost fire. The only fire I’ll never know about is the tormenting fire of Hell. I’ve been washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus and bless His name that is a fire I will never feel!
