Past championship teams from Lockhart High, Jonesville High, Union High and Sims Middle will soon be recognized on heritage banners that will be permenantly displayed in the Union County High School Gymnasium.

The Union County School District formed a committee of five — Chairman Randy Crocker, Mickey Gist, Bo Rabb, Mike Lancaster and Steven Addis — to collect information from each of the schools to name each region, upperstate and state champions in all sports prior to the consolidation in 2007.

Crocker said the committee has met several times while gathering the data and feel that they have complete lists for Lockhart, Jonesville and Union High and are still researching Sims.

“It’s been a lot of fun and very educational putting all this together,” said Crocker. “There is a rich history of athletic success in this county and we want to remember that.”

The committee has been diligantly working and hope to have the banners up by the start of the next school year.

“I’d like to personally thank the committee members,” said Crocker. “They’re working hard to see that these banners come to fruition.”

Anyone possessing information about Region or Conference Champions, Upperstate Champions or State Champions from any of the four schools in any sport prior to the consolidation are asked to contact Crocker at Union County Schools District office before May 25 by phone at (864) 429-1740 or by email at Rcrocker_perc@union.k12.sc.us.

Documentation requested for the Heritage banners include: Trophy or plaque, banner, yearbook, newspaper article, or Internet source.
