UNION — Jessie Mae Hill Sims, 87, widow of Charles Sims, 123 Talley Drive, Union, SC, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012.
Jessie was born in Harrisburg, Pa., a daughter of the late Harry and Amy Thomas Hill. She was the 1943 Sims High School Salutatorian and held a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va and a Masters in Social Work from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Jessie was employed with the State Department of Social Services in Detroit, MI. She was a member of City Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church in Detroit, MI, and Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church in Spartanburg, SC.
Surviving family members include a son, Charles Michael Sims of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter-in-law Amy Lori Sims of Detroit, MI; two sisters-in-law, Mamie Lawson of Union, SC, and Halie Q. Sims of Lithonia, Ga.; a beloved niece, Eleanor (George) Devlin of Roswell, Ga.; two cherished nephews, Howard (Gayle) Free of Spartanburg, SC, William E. (Carolyn) Free III of Union, SC; four very special family members, Barbara Free and Fannie Mae Means, both of Union, SC, Linda Long of Spartanburg, SC, Michael and Diana Lopes of Boston, Mass.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, Spartanburg, SC, with the Rev. Carl Neismith officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery in Union, SC.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers while family and friends will serve as flower bearers.
Visitation will be 1-6 p.m. and wake services 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at Union Community Funeral Home, 217 W. Main St., Union.
