The Union County golf team will tee off in Fort Mill at 9 a.m. on Monday in the upperstate competition and coach Will Hickson and his boys are eager for the challenge.
“The confidence level is great,” said Hickson. “These guys are self-motivated. They really want to do well and they work hard. They’re friends, too, which I think is important for a team.”
The camaraderie was evident during practice as team and coach joked and challenged one another.
“We’ve played together for about five years,” said senior Jordan Crumpton. “We all get along really well and we just encourage each other to do well.”
Last year, the Jackets became the first golf team in the history of the school to win a region championship and also went on to compete in the state tournament which is held in Myrtle Beach.
This year, Union County has earned its second consecutive region title and looks to go a step further than last year by winning State.
The first task will be to do well on Monday. The top eight teams at upperstate will move on to the state tournament and Union County plans to be one of them.
“We feel like we have a really good chance,” said senior Billy Weibley. “We’ve won upperstate before and I feel like we can do it again.”
Hickson will look to his “big three” of Weibley, Crumpton and Hunter Parks to step up with consistency but will also need Wes Vassey and Harrison Kelly to provide low numbers as the four lowest scores from each team are combined for the final tally.
“It’s going to be a challenge,” said Hickson. “We’ve got to get four consistent scores.”
The Jackets team, who are their own biggest critics, feel that despite winning the region championship, there is still room to improve.
“We’re working on every part of our game,” said Parks. “We didn’t play our best ball at Region and we want to make up for that.”
The team is excited to continue its quest for another upperstate championship and to follow that up with a state title.
“Hopefully we’ll do well in the upperstate tournament and celebrate with a trip to the beach,” said Hickson.
