Selected to attend national teachers academy

Monarch Elementary School is pleased to announce that teacherGinnie Newton Ponder has been specially selected by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to attend the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at the Liberty Science Center. Ginnie Ponder will join 200 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade teachers from across the nation in Jersey City, NJ on July 22 for this one week-intensive, all-expense paid professional development opportunity. At the Academy, Mrs. Ponder will learn innovative ways to inspire students in math and science. The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy launched in 2005 through a partnership between Phil and Amy Mickelson, ExxonMobil and developed in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions. Since its launch, more than 3,000 teachers have attended impacting more than 175,000 students nationwide.

PINCKNEY DISTRICT CHAPTER of the SC Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Anglican Church, 601 Webber Road, Spartanburg, at 7 p.m. Dean Campbell will speak on the “Square of Dark Corner.” Dark Corner includes the entire northwest corner of the state and is among the most intriguing areas in the upstate.

UNION COUNTY JUNIOR CHARITY LEAGUE will sponsor a Charity Chase 5k run/walk at 8:30 a.m. at Union County Fair Grounds upper entrance near Paradise Home Center. THE UNION COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL will hold a “Gourding Workshop” taught by Angie Craft. All materials will be furnished by the instructor and are included in the workshop fee. Students will learn paper making using the insides of the gourd during the morning session and, in the afternoon, will use the handmade paper as one of the design elements for creating a work of art from the gourd.
