A new local business will provide automobile repairs and maintenance at any location.
Buffalo resident Tommy Lawson’s new business — Auto-Mobile Repair — is billed as “the auto shop that comes to you.”
Lawson, a native of Fayetteville, NC, said he has been working on cars since he was about 12 years old.
“My dad had an Acura Legend, and the engine blew in it,” Lawson said. “That was the beginning.”
From there, Lawson worked on anything mechanical that he could get his hands on. His first professional job came when he was 18 as he worked for Lear Siegler, a company which was contracted to service military vehicles and equipment.
In 2006, Lawson graduated from the NASCAR Technical Institute (NTI) in Mooresville, NC, after participating in the core and Ford F.A.C.T. programs and receiving a Director’s Honors List award. Lawson also has ASE certifications including the following:
MASTER CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN
- Engine Repair
- Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
- Manual Drive Train/Transaxle
- Suspension & Steering
- Brakes
- Electrical/Electronic Systems
- Heating & Air Conditioning
- Engine Performance
ADVANCE LEVEL TECHNICIAN

UNDERCAR SPECIALIST

Lawson moved to Buffalo — his father’s hometown — and into a house across the street from his grandmother’s.
“I planned to be here for one year,” Lawson said.
His plans changed, however, after he met and eventually married Union native Caroline Wilkes Lawson. The couple currently resides in Buffalo.
Since Lawson has lived in Union County, he has worked at various places in Spartanburg, but his dream was always in the back of his mind.
“I always wanted my own shop since I decided to do this professionally,” Lawson said, explaining the entrepreneurial influences. “My father was in business for himself for the better part of my life. My parents did pretty well in Amway — they still are.”
Instead of opening a traditional auto shop, Lawson decided to do something different. He says the differences between his business and others can be summed up into convenience, education and peace of mind.
Lawson offers convenience by bringing his van full of tools and equipment to the customer. He says Auto-Mobile Repair will strive to fit into the customer’s schedule, operating anywhere in Union County and surrounding areas. He also offers education and peace of mind by welcoming customers to watch while he works and ask questions in order to know what they are paying for.
“The big thing is people will know the technician working on their car; they won’t be talking to a sales person at a front desk,” Lawson said. “You get to know your car by talking to the technician. It’s important for customers to feel confident that the right repair is being made or that the maintenance being performed is for the right reasons.”
Lawson said many of his first-time customers think they are bothering him by looking over his shoulder or asking questions and often make jokes that he probably wants them to go away.
“It’s not a bother to me at all,” Lawson said. “I want people to know they’re getting what they pay for.”
