Soldiers and families of the Headquarters Company 1-118 Infantry will be honored during the Freedom Salute Ceremony at the Union County High School gymnatorium at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The ceremony is a National Guard program that recognizes the contributions of soldiers and their families in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. A total of 65 national guardsmen from Union County have been deployed to Afghanistan over the last 18 months. A few have had their tours extended but most returned home earlier this year. The 1-118 is currently undergoing reorganization for possible further deployments.

The featured speaker will be Brig. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, commander of the 218th Mechanized Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard. Sgt. 1st Class Steve Sinclair said that during the ceremony there will be special recognition for national guardsmen who have been deployed more than once overseas and their families. A total of 35 guardsmen have done two or more tours of duty in Afghanistan and/or Iraq, Bosnia and Kosovo.
