LOCKHART - This year's Lockhart Christmas Parade will be dedicated to the memory of its most dedicated supporter, the late Mayor Robert “Beaver” Canupp.
Canupp, who died Aug. 8 after serving three months as mayor, was honored Tuesday evening. The Lockhart Town Council presented Canupp's family with a plaque bearing his picture. The plaque was hung on a wall in the town hall by Canupp's sons, Allen and Daniel, next to a picture of another mayor, the late Walter Martin. The plaque will remain there to commemorate Canupp's service to the town.
That service included helping organize the town's Christmas Parade. Council member Nancy Lawson said a car with a sign bearing Canupp's name will lead the parade through the town.
Canupp's brother, Barry, thanked the town and said he will work to make this year's parade Lockhart's biggest.
“I appreciate the town doing this in memory of him,” he said. “I'm involved in the parade because his goal was to have the biggest parade. I want this year's parade to be as big as possible in his honor.”
Canupp said anyone wanting to participate in the parade may call the Lockhart Cafe at 545-2346 or Robert and Nancy Lawson at 545-6856.
The Lockhart Christmas Parade will be held Dec. 7 at 3 p.m.
In other business, council voted unanimously to get estimates for a new storm door for the Lockhart Town Council and to pay $200 to renew the town's membership in the S.C. Rural Water Association.
Council voted 3-1 to lease the lot at 120 Canal Road to Ray Duncan. A proposed lease agreement will be drafted and brought back to council for approval.
Mrs. Lawson cast the only dissenting vote, saying she wanted more time to think about the proposal.
Duncan, who has been seeking the lease for some time, will use the site for parking space for his family's personal vehicles and will maintain the property.
