An elderly Union woman was killed Saturday night in a head-on collision that occurred not far from her home.

Union County Coroner William Holcombe said Mildred Lamb, 85, of 889 Hawkins Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which occurred around 7:50 p.m. on S.C. 215 near the Hawkins Road intersection. Holcombe said an autopsy was performed on Mrs. Lamb's body Sunday at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. The results were not available Sunday night.

Mrs. Lamb was traveling south in a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass that collided head-on with a 2004 Toyota pickup driven by Johnnie Adair of Old Converse Road, Spartanburg. Adair was treated at Wallace Thomson Hospital for his injuries.

Holcombe said Adair had been hunting and was apparently headed home. Holcombe said authorities think Mrs. Lamb might have overrun her turn.

Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Mrs. Lamb traveled left of center and her vehicle struck Adair's truck. McDougald said the wreck is still under investigation. McDougald said Mrs. Lamb was wearing a seat belt. The air bag deployed in her car.

Mrs. Lamb is the sixth person to die in a vehicle accident on a Union County road in 2008.
