A traffic stop by county deputies resulted in the arrest of two men Tuesday.

Gilliam Lyles Jr., 53, of 241 Beltline Road was charged by the Union County Sheriff's Office with possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.

Michael Lewis Lyles, 48, of 94 Sanders Road, Whitmire, was charged with driving under suspension.

A report said Lt. John Sherfield received information that the Lyles had illegal drugs. A traffic stop was performed on their vehicle on U.S. 176. Michael Lyles, the driver of the Cadillac the men were in, had a suspended license and was arrested.

Officers asked for and received consent to search the car and found rolling papers and a homemade crack pipe. Sherfield asked Gilliam Lyles if he had anything in his pockets and he said he did not. Sherfield asked him to remove all of the items from his pockets. He did, except for a pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket. Sherfield removed the cigarettes and found a quantity of crack wrapped in a piece of paper in a plastic wrapper around the pack. Gilliam Lyles was arrested.

Gilliam Lyles was taken to the Union County Jail by Sgt. Russell Vinson. Upon arrival, Vinson found a small bag of marijuana and a pack of rolling papers in the floorboard of the patrol car near where Gilliam Lyles had been sitting.

Scooter stolen

On 152 Sunny Acres Road, a teen-ager told Deputy Roxie Belue Thursday that someone took his Matrix scooter, which is worth $2,300.

The victim said his cousin called him and said he saw a man riding on a scooter like his on Rogerstown Road in Jonesville around midnight. He checked to see if his was in the yard and it was not.

The scooter has a bent left handle grip and a milk crate on the back.
