A two-car collision that sent a woman to the hospital Monday afternoon is under investigation by the Union Public Safety Department
Public Safety Director Sam White said the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 176 and S.C. 49. He said it appears the accident occurred when a 2007 KIA traveling north on U.S. 176 collided with a 1993 Ford attempting to turn onto West Main Street from 176. He said investigators have yet to confirm this because they have been unable to interview the driver of the Ford, Mary Lynn Tettit, who was admitted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
White said that Mrs. Tettit, 67, 296 Meansville Road, Union, was alone in her vehicle at the time of the accident. EMS personnel said Mrs. Tettit hit her head on the windshield and also complained of chest pains. Because of this they transported her to Spartanburg Regional and told officers that it was possible she could be there for a few days.
A spokesperson for Spartanburg Regional confirmed that Mrs. Tettit was a patient at the hospital but could offer no further information about her condition.
The driver of the KIA, Jason Wyatt Smith, 17, 482 Bailey Road, Buffalo, was examined at the scene and released.
White said investigators plan to interview Mrs. Tettit when she is released from the hospital. At that time a final determination will be made on the cause of the accident and whether or not any charges will be filed.
