Scouts believe anything is possible with popcorn, including new uniforms and swim lessons.

Area Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs, along with Scouts across the nation, are involved in their annual “Trail's End” brand popcorn sale. Local Scout leaders say don't be surprised if a Scout comes to your door hoping to make a sale. The slogan for the fund-raiser is “Anything's possible with popcorn.”

“The first day we went door to door, we had over $1,000 worth of sales in one day,” said Scott McClellan, leader of Cub Scout Pack 120. “Last year, we worked on it for a little over a month and only sold $500 worth. Door to door sales are definitely the answer.”

Popcorn comes in 11 different varieties and ranges in price from a 5-way tin for $50 to caramel corn for $8. Customers also can pay to have $25 worth of popcorn treats sent to servicemen and women.

Varieties include cheese, chocolately caramel crunch, kettle corn, butter and others.

“I can't think of any kind of popcorn we don't have,” said McClellan with a laugh. “It's been a great success. It's a great way to earn their own way rather than to have to ask parents for money. It give them responsibility.”

McClellan said money from the popcorn sale will be used to buy new uniforms and pay for eight weeks of swim lessons at the Spartanburg Swim Center.

Popcorn sales will conclude in mid-October with delivery in November. Those interested in purchasing popcorn may call McClellan at 427-1690 or stop by Old Timey Carwash on Kirby Street and ask for Mickey Gist.
