Mamie Pearl Johnson Barrett, 91, of 191 Minnow Bridge Road, Sedalia, widow of Arthur L. Barrett, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, in the Laurens County Health Care System after a brief illness.

Mrs. Barrett was born in Union County, March 9, 1917, a daughter of the late Allen and Leana Degraphenreid Johnson. She was a retired cook at Whitten Center. She joined New Hope A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age and was a Deaconess, senior choir member, Usher Board Emeritus, president of Stewardess Board #4, a member of W.H. @ O.M.S., and president of the Women's Aide Society Lodge #4.

Surviving are four daughters, Eunice Thompson, Dorothy (James) Jeter, Matilda (Clarence) Renwick and Wilhelmenia (Harold) Beaty, all of Union; five sons, James (Emma) Smith, Arthur (Vivian) Barrett, Ernell (Dorothy) Barrett, and Fredrick (Sharon) Barrett, all of Union, Howard (Cheryl) Barrett of Columbia; three sisters, Margie Norman and Sally Ferguson, both of Union and Gladys Mars of Clinton; an aunt, Evelyn Degraphenreid of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a grandson reared in the home, Chester (Maureen) Barrett, of Union; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Barrett was predeceased by a son, Allen Barrett; six sisters, Alberta Rice, Louise Jackson, Victoria Saber, Sicily Johnson, Jessie Peace and Corrie Williams; seven brothers, Willie, Eugene, Ernest, Leander, Allen, Joe D. and King D. Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at the New Hope A.M.E. Zion Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Eugene Goodwin.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family is at the home, 191 Minnow Bridge, Sedalia.

The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
