WHITMIRE - The Lady Wolverines varsity girls' tennis team finished No. 2 in the state last year, behind Christ Church. Whitmire looks to build on that success this season.
In 2007, WHS won nine games and beat teams from every classification, including much bigger schools.
The Wolverines lose two starters, No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and five others to graduation. But Whitmire has picked up seven younger players, 7th-graders, who should be of great value for the program's future.
As for this year, 15 girls are on the roster. Jenna Baker, a junior, will play at No. 1 singles. Faith Plemmons, a senior, will play at No. 2 singles.
Betsy Long, also a senior, will play at No. 3 singles. Juniors Lynlee Thompson and Deanna Willard finish out the starting five.
“Jenna went from No. 4 to No. 1 this year,” said coach Dan Wilder. “She's very talented. We're looking for big things from her. She should be entertaining to watch.”
Thompson and Willard combined for a 21-3 doubles record in 2007. They are so good together, Wilder couldn't break them up and they'll play No. 1 doubles to start the season. No. 2 doubles will be sophomore Alex Cromer and senior Dawn Weber.
Wilder said Thompson and Willard moving into singles play should help the team.
“I feel strong with them there,” he said.
But the No. 2 doubles team has never played a match and will have to grow up quick.
Another player who could see playing time is Allyson Greenway, a 7th-grader. Others will compete in exhibitions and JV matches.
The Whitmire tennis program enters its sixth year under Wilder and he's excited.
“I feel good about things going in,” he said.
Whitmire hosts Chester on Tuesday.
