Union County High School will start a girls' golf program in the fall.

An organizational meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the gymnasium.

“This gives our girls more opportunity,” said athletic director Mike Massey.

In the last few years several schools have added girls' golf programs. Riverside and Blue Ridge are two Region III-3A teams with teams already in place.

“It's a growing sport with a state championship,” said Massey.

It's also a sport that provides girls with opportunities beyond high school.

“Golf gives girls more opportunities at scholarships,” said Massey. “It's a sport they can take with them the rest of their lives, whether they play in college or not. It's a great recreation sport.”

River Chase Golf Club is supportive and ready to welcome the team. Several UCHS coaches are supportive.

“We're excited about getting one started,” said Massey. “This will be the first team in Union County history.”

A preliminary meeting was held in the spring with five girls expressing interest. In past years, girls had expressed interest in the sport.

The meeting on Tuesday will prove whether the team is dream or reality.

“We want to see if we have enough interest,” said Massey, who believes there will be enough girls to form the team.

The Lady Yellow Jackets would begin practice in August.
