CARLISLE - A month after raising its garbage collection fee the Town of Carlisle is buying trash cans for some of its customers.
Carlisle Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to purchase 50 trash cans for $1,000 and distribute them to customers who don't have them. Town Clerk Shannon McBride said the decision was in response to customers who complained that the town raised its garbage collection fee from $8.50 a month to $10 but has not provided them with trash cans.
Carlisle's trash collection contractor, Joe Woods, distributed 100 trash cans three years ago. The town provides garbage collection service to 215 customers within its municipal limits.
Fun Day
Council also voted unanimously to designate Aug. 16 as the town's fifth annual Community Fun Day.
Activities will include games, prizes, rides for the children, free food and the Carlisle Pageant.
Flood prevention
Council also voted unanimously to approve second and final reading of a flood damage prevention ordinance.
Mrs. McBride said the ordinance was passed at the behest of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and FEMA. The organizations are offering updated flood maps to communities throughout South Carolina. To receive a map, communities must approve a flood damage prevention ordinance requesting the map.
As part of the motion, council also voted to join the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Membership in the NFIP will result in lower flood insurance rates for town residents
