A 16-year-old Union boy is charged with attempted armed robbery in an incident that occurred this morning at 49 West Apartments.
Chief Sam White of the Union Public Safety Department said the boy will be charged as an adult but his name was not released because of his age. More arrests are expected, pending further investigation.
According to a report, a man in an apartment on 1208 West Main St. told Officer Al Griffin he heard a loud noise outside his residence around 1:23 a.m. He got out of bed and saw a white truck parked in the roadway. One person got out of the truck and stood in the roadway. Two others got out of the bed.
The 50-year-old victim said he opened his back door and one of the people from the truck came to his door with something covering his face and carrying a pistol. He told the victim to “give it up.” The victim said he had no money. The three got in the truck and left.
Sgt. David Brewington located the truck at the Mini-Mart on South Duncan By-Pass. The victim was brought to the store and identified the 16-year-old as one of the men involved in the incident. The victim also told Capt. Freddie Gault and Lt. Charles Henderson that he had received a call from one of the three in the truck who said they were “just playing” and not to call the police.
A similar incident involving a white truck occurred around the same time on Old Buffalo Road. White said it may be connected to the attempted robbery at the apartments.
A 45-year-old man told Griffin he was walking when two men came from behind a residence and approached him. One of the men said to “give it up.” The victim said he had no money. He dropped bags he was carrying and one of the suspects went through them. The suspects then fled toward the fairgrounds.
One suspect was wearing a black shirt and a red bandana over his face. The other was wearing a gray sweatshirt and had a black pistol in his hand but never pointed it at the victim.
The victim said he saw a white truck on Harris Street that may have been connected to the incident. He said the driver of the truck was yelling, but the victim was not sure who he was yelling at.
