An elderly woman was killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle wreck on S.C. 215.
The wreck occurred around 10 p.m. near the intersection with Strother Road. Union County Coroner William Holcombe said he was working this morning to contact the family of the 88-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family members. He said the 1999 Buick Regal she was driving was registered in Fort Mill - which likely is her home - but her driver's license had been issued in Florida.
Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin with the Highway Patrol said the woman was traveling north on S.C. 215 about seven miles south of the Union city limits when her vehicle left the roadway on the right side and struck a tree.
"The cause is undetermined and is still under investigation," Gaskin said.
Union County EMS, the Union County Rescue Squad and Santuc firefighters were called to the scene. The woman had to be extricated from the vehicle. Her airbag deployed and emergency personnel said she was wearing a seatbelt.
Santuc firefighter Manus Sims said the woman was talking when he arrived at the wreck.
"She said, 'Help me,'" Sims said. "I told her the ambulance was on the way."
