and injecting himself

A former officer at the Union County Detention Center is accused of using cocaine stored at the facility for drug dog training purposes.
Ricky Wayne Haney, 53, of 205 Bailey Road, Buffalo, was charged Wednesday by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division with misconduct in office and possession of cocaine. His arrest came as a result of an investigation by SLED at the request of the detention center. His case will be prosecuted by the 16th Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Haney's arrest warrants, signed by Agent S. Branham, said that on April 7 Haney gained access to a secure location at the detention center, took cocaine from Drug Enforcement Agency K-9 training aids and injected himself with it through a syringe he also acquired at the facility. His actions compromised the safety of the institution and inmates, the warrants said. Part of the cocaine later was found in his uniform shirt pocket.
Detention center director Niel McKeown said Haney was found unconscious at the facility and had to be rushed to Wallace Thomson Hospital by Union County EMS. He was fired from his job.
McKeown said this morning he had not had a chance to confer with SLED about any statements Haney had given.
Haney was released from the Union County Jail Wednesday night on $10,000 surety bond.
