Union County First Steps School Readiness, child care providers and other community partners who work with young children will celebrate the “Week of the Young Child,” April 13-19.

Linda Parker, executive director of Union County First Steps, said the purpose of the week is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that help meet those needs.

The theme of the “Week of the Young Child,” is “Bringing Communities Together for Children - Children Bring Communities Together.”

Monday at 10 a.m. a parade will be led by Union County Children down Main Street from Arthur State Bank to the Union County Courthouse, where Mayor Bruce Morgan will sign a proclamation declaring the week.

Throughout the week, Head Start Centers, 4-K programs and child care providers will be celebrating with fun-filled activities, Mrs. Parker said. Activities are scheduled at the Union County Carnegie Library, including a special book display on trucks.

Union County First Steps will present “Touch a Truck,” an interactive exhibit on Saturday, April 19, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Union County Fairgrounds.

“This special family event will give children and their families the opportunity to touch and explore approximately 25 vehicles, including emergency vehicles, plus enjoy art and craft activities,” Mrs. Parker said.

There will be yoga for children presented by the YMCA, a children's art display, exhibits and workshops by local organizations serving young children, train rides, door prizes, healthy snacks and free books about trucks to the first 150 children who attend. Admission is free.

Mrs. Parker said the event is being made possible by the contributions and efforts of many community partners.
