Multiple rescue units were called and a portion of the Whitmire Highway had to be blocked off Sunday afternoon after a two-vehicle wreck involving a church van.
The wreck occurred around 12:40 p.m. Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said a Chevrolet driven by 18-year-old Anthony Wise of Prosperity was stopped in the roadway as another vehicle was making a left turn onto Mt. Vernon Road.
The Mt. Rowell Church van, driven by James Sims, 62, of Union, was traveling toward Union. Sims was unable to stop and the van struck the rear of Wise's car then went down an embankment and struck a tree.
No one was seriously injured, but some of those in the van had difficulty getting out of the vehicle. Union County EMS, the Union County Rescue Squad, Southside and Santuck fire departments were called to the wreck.
Several people were taken to Wallace Thomson Hospital and treated in the emergency room.
“We were there about two hours,” said Southside Fire Department Spokesman Roger Bailey. “We had to block 176, which presented some interesting logistical problems.”
Sims was charged with driving too fast for conditions.
